Q.) What type cancer took your leg?
A.)Synovial sarcoma in the lining of the knee
Q.) Do you have phantom pain?
A.) I have what you'd call phantom sensations. At times they can hurt and cause spasms, but that happens very infrequently. The sensations are more of a tingling feeling like when your foot is asleep. I have these sensations most of the time, but have learned to tune them out.
Q.) Is your stump soft?
A.) I call mine a "leglette" (stump sounds too clinical). But yes, it is soft.
Q.) Do you enjoy having your stump massaged?
A.) Yes, I love for my little leg to be massaged just as I like any area of my body being massaged. However, I do like being massaged on my leglette more than any other location on my body.
Q.) Do you wear a prosthesis?
A.)Yes, I do wear a prosthesis. I wear it all day at work. I use a cane with the prosthesis for better stability, but I walk fairly well for an amputation as high as mine. Once I am home, I take the leg off. I can curl up and get more comfortable without it on. I try to exercise 5 days/week and do not wear the prosthesis while working out. I also tend to spend my weekends without wearing my prosthesis.
Q.) What kind of prosthesis do you wear?
A.) I use a gel-liner one-way-lock flexible framed socket. The knee unit is hydraulic, but I am not certain of the brand. The ankle is adjustable with a button so that I can wear various heel heights. I prefer to go not more than 2-3 inches with the heels however. The covering is foam, so it looks pretty natural. Because my residual limb is so short, I walk with a cane most of the time. Overall I walk pretty well with my prosthesis, but I have been considering a C-Leg. I need to look into whether my insurance company would cover something like that expensive. I would also like to see someone walking with one in person to get a better idea of how they work.
Q.) Do you wear shorts and short skirts with your prosthesis?
A.) Definitely! I love the summer and warm weather, so I am always wearing shorts when it's warm. I also wear dresses and shorts without my prosthesis, however I do prefer to have the skirts/shorts long enough to hide my leglette. I just do not like to have it showing unless I am sunning, swimming, or diving.
Q.) Do you use underarm or forearm crutches?
A.) I have used both type crutches, but I much prefer the underarm crutches because I can carry things more easily. Some of the best crutches I've ever used are from WalkEasy.com. They are a little pricey, but are well made and come in pretty colors.
Q.) Do you do many activities outside of work?
A.) I do enjoy many activities, mostly water sports. I love to scuba dive and swim ( I am actually a strong swimmer ). I have done indoor wall climbing, and have on occasion done some snow skiing. I also enjoy going out and dancing in clubs.
Q.) What was it like when you first lost your leg?
A.) I thought it was the end of the world at age 15. I did not think that I would ever have a boyfriend and that men would never find me attractive. Not until college did I open up and become more outgoing. As much as I love the water, I didn't go swimming in public until I was about 20 years old. But I have overcome most of my hang-ups with missing a leg now. Scuba diving is one of my favorite hobbies, and I never wear my prosthesis for that. I just decided I wanted to enjoy life and I did not care what others thought of how I looked. I did not want to let my fears prevent me from enjoying life.
Q.) How do you deal with male relationships and what do you think about devotees?
A.) For many years I was very self-conscious about how men would see me physically. I was afraid that I would never be found attractive or sexually appealing because of the missing limb. It was funny and nice to discover that there were men attracted to my amputation. I have become very comfortable with devotees over the years, and do prefer being in a relationship with one.
Q.) Would you consider doing requested photo sets or videos?
A.) I would definitely consider doing special requested photos or videos, but no nudity. Some things need to be left to the imagination!
Q.) What is your opinion on your images being shared?
A.) I know that it is going to occur and it's pretty much impossible to stop, but makes it more difficult for the girls to keep selling photos. I am only doing this for a little extra cash...I will definitely not be quitting my day job. This site costs money and time to run, and it will only stay up if it is profitable. If "sharing" becomes a problem where I cannot afford to run the site, then I would have no choice but to close the site. I think that my prices are very reasonable, so anyone that does share is pretty lame in my opinion.
Q.) What's your favorite color?
A.) Cobalt blue. I also love other shades of blue as well as purples and greens.
Q.) What is your favorite food?
A.) Hmm, everything...I really love food :-). Anything that has seafood in it is usually what I order in restaurants. If I had to pick a favorite ethnic food, it would have to be Indian. I also have a terrible sweet tooth. Tiramisu, cheesecake, and ice cream are my favorites. It's a wonder that I don't weigh a ton!
Q.) What is your favorite type music?
A.) I like all kinds of music such as rock, punk, techno, metal, 70's rock, and some hip/hop. My favorite bands of all time would be Led Zepplin, Van Halen (with David Lee Roth), U-2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Police. I have been totally in love with Sting since forever, so I could never leave the Police out.
Q.) What would you like to do before you die?
A.) Hopefully I have a chance to do many exciting things before I meet my maker, but I would love to see the Aurora Borealis in Alaska and dive in the Galapagos someday. It would also be really cool to play a part in a movie (a real movie), but I won't hold my breath on that one, lol.
Q.) Do you have children?
A.) No, I never had kids. I decided several years ago that I did not want to have any children of my own. I prefer being a fabulous aunt instead!
Q.) Do you have pets?
A.) Yes. I have 2 cats and a Chihuahua that thinks he rules the roost.
Q.) Are you single?
A.) I am taken by the coolest guy ever. I met him at one of Jama Bennett's conferences. He is absolutely the love of my life.
Q.) What personality/physical traits do you like in men?
A.) Intelligence and a great sense of humor are at the top of my list. If a man can keep me laughing, I just love that. He's got to be able to communicate his feelings as well. If problems can't be discussed, then they can't be resolved and the relationship is doomed. I like for a man to be playful, carefree and adventurous too. And while chivalry may be almost dead, I do love it when men hold doors open for me. In fact, it's a slight turn-off when men don't open car doors. As for physical, I have always preferred taller men since I am 5'7", but my views on that have changed drastically. I want to be loved, appreciated and cherished by an open and honest man more than anything. I also want a man that will stick through the difficult times to keep my love if he earns that. Relationships will always have their rough times, so I want a man that's willing to make a real effort to work through those times. You only fight for things that you value.
Q.) Are you friends with any other amputee models?
A.) Sorry guys, all of my buddies are able-bodied. I am usually the gimp of the group when I am out with friends. I have met a few models over the years, but I never kept up with any of them. PLEASE do not ask me if I know how to reach other amputee models (past or present). Even if I do know how I will NOT tell you. If they want to be found then they'll make themselves known.
Q.) Do you use an IM or would you like to have a pen pal?
A.) I seldom get online for that. I'm just not a fan of chatting online. I'd rather correspond via email and then talk by phone if things progress from there. While I enjoy getting messages from fans, I just do not have the time to answer everyone. My job keeps me very busy and this web site is only a small portion of my private life. Hopefully my FAQ page will answer some questions you all have.
I did create a MySpace page dedicated to devotees and amputees/disabled people. If you'd like to join that group, the address is http://www.myspace.com/thescarletmuse. Add me as a friend and then request to be added into my private discussion group. I much prefer communicating there rather than bog this address down with emails of general correspondence. My only rule on MySpace is that need to have a photo/photos of yourself posted on your page. Photos help me remember people better and it's really only fair that I see your face since you know what I look like.
